Sometimes things just have to happen quickly and that’s okay. Some of our couples don’t have time to wait for weekly or biweekly sessions. So they book us for a whole day or two or tree.
This is called Marathon Therapy. Maybe you finally matched your schedule and that is the day you decide to dedicate to your relationship. Maybe you discovered an affair and after a heartbreaking weekend talking in circles you decide that a 90-minute counseling session just won’t cut it. Lots happens in Marathon Therapy.
The following is a usual schedule and list what to expect in Marathon sessions:
Marathon Couple Therapy is an intensive, short-term, focused, experiential modality of couple and marriage therapy focused on transforming your relationship over a period of 2-3 days. The purpose is to help resolve current crises in the relationship or a specific problem in the relationship. It is not meant to replace an ongoing long term therapy.
Because of the limited time, the therapy is focused on assessing the current problem or crisis in the relationship. Couples work to deepen understanding of the crisis and – its emotional impact on both partners and the relationship. Goals will be set that work towards bridging the distance in your relationship and/or working towards understanding and compromise on your gridlocked problem.
Prior to starting your Marathon Therapy, you will receive an assessment questionnaire and a zoom session with a couple Therapist so that we able to begin working on your relationship immediately upon arrival to the office. (this applies outside of the pandemic)
The structure of each therapy day will vary depending on your needs. We will establish your therapeutic treatment plan and goals in the beginning of your marathon therapy. We will closely focus on your problem at hand and the desired therapeutic goal for the relationship.
What are the expected outcomes of Marathon Couple Therapy?
Per John and Julie Gottman, Marathon Therapy often leads to reduction of distress in the relationship, resolution of a specific problem, a stronger relationship with more connection. In many cases it has moved the couple from thinking about ending the relationship to recommitting in new ways.
What are the risks involved with Marathon Method Couple Therapy?
Because of the limited time, higher emotional intensity, and laser focus on the issue at hand, you or your partner may experience stronger than usual emotional responses (e.g. sadness, loss, guilt, fear or anxiety, anger or loneliness or helplessness). We will support you with our empathic and kind approach using Gottman Method therapy, EFT, and PACT therapy techniques to help you deescalate and manage your emotions.
When is Marathon Couple Therapy contraindicated?
- If there is an active alcohol and/or drug addiction
- If there is serious violence in your relationship
- If either partner currently has an untreated mental illness
- If there is an undisclosed, current affair that you are not willing to disclose
- If either partner is experiencing suicidal or homicidal thoughts or has history of serious harm inflicted on self or others.
Upon completion of your Marathon Couple Therapy, we will provide you with a summary of your therapy as well as recommendations for you as a couple and individually. If you elect to continue therapy, we will reach out to your current or elected therapist once you both sign a release of information to provide continuity of care.
How does this work?
If you live in town, it’s pretty easy. Call us and we will book 2 or 3 consecutive day to transform your relationship. (During Covid we will meet via Telehealth)
If you live out of town, you will book 2 or 3 days of therapy and stay in a local hotel. The office is located in Towson, Maryland –in central Baltimore County near Towson University which is 20 minutes north of Baltimore City. During the Pandemic the office can be your living room and we will meet virtually. Please note, teletherapy restrictions require that the client be located in the state where the clinician is licensed at the time of service.
Once we go back to normal our office is very private and comfortable with a walkable option for lunch.
Depending upon how the therapy goes, you may choose to return for follow-up sessions or choose to be referred to a therapist in your hometown for ongoing therapy.
Because of high scheduling demand, we have a 3 weeks’ cancellation policy if you change your mind
